Green Tip of the Day: Add safety to hallways, kid’s bedrooms, and other spaces by using LED (light emitting diodes) night lights!

LEDs are greener than standard incandescent, and even fluorescent, light bulbs because they generate almost no waste heat.  LEDs remain cool to the touch, so they don’t add excess heat into living spaces. They can go years before they need to be changed, thereby cutting down on landfill waste. LEDs use only pennies a year in energy, and result in much lower carbon emissions over traditional lighting.

Green Tip of the Day: Microwave safer and greener without plastics!

It’s better for your health and better for the environment to use heat-resistant glass/ceramic containers in your microwave, instead of plastics that create additional CO2 in their production. Heating increases the likelihood of chemicals being released from a material; and chemicals used to make plastics pliable, known as plasticizers (e.g. DEHA), are known to pass into foods when heated. Help create less trash, by avoiding the use of soft plastic containers, plastic wrap, and take-out containers in your microwave.

Green Tip of the Day: Park in the shade to save some Green!

You can help decrease fuel lost to evaporation, by parking your car in shaded parking spots during hotter weather. Even with a closed tank, gasoline can evaporate rapidly when exposed to higher temperatures.  Keeping your vehicle cooler also means running your AC less, which would add to your fuel savings. If a shaded spot isn’t available, you can still keep your car interior cool by using a windshield sun-shade, which reflects solar heat away from the cabin!

Think about how many rolls of toilet paper your household goes through every month, multiply that by the millions of families across the U.S. and you’re talking about hundreds of thousands of trees felled in the process! By switching to recycled content TP, tissues and paper towels you can make a huge, positive impact on the earth. Look for 100% recycled content, 50% post-consumer recycled content and no toxic chlorine chemicals used to bleach the material.

Green Tip of the Day. Upgrade your shower curtain.

Many plastic shower curtains and liners are made of PVC which include 100s of toxins. Avoid PVC curtains or liners, and switch up to an EVA or fabric shower curtain. EVA is a safer plastic and is not made with chlorine, making it more eco-friendly than PVC.
